Concept + Context = Concert
These are my 5 favorite words: “Let’s put on a show!”
Really. No, really. As luck would have it, I’m a
director/choreographer by trade, so I get to put on lots of shows.

Know Your Market
Yes, you’re the best! Does that make you a success? Do
you know four- to twelve-year-old children and their parents
are your market? If you do, how do you draw this group to
your studio? Continue to strive to make the best dancers
possible. Just don’t flaunt it.

Pre-Pointe Parents In Your Back
Pocket Some parents also have preconceived
notions of sending their daughter to class the first day
with pointe shoes in hand and expecting to see her twirl
around “on her toes” before the day is over. As their pointe
teacher, be sure that your parameters are clearly stated
ahead of time to prevent turmoil later on down the line. |

Trading The World For 1,600 Square
Feet
If you had told me 10 years ago that
one day I would be the
proud owner of a tiny but lovely dance school, I would have

what I wanted—I walked in, taught my classes, and off I went
with no worries. |

Our Readers Want Your
Advice
I’m finding it hard to balance the parental
responsibility and the school responsibility with just one child and
now I’m panicking; wondering how I’m going to manage two! I missed
my daughter’s first steps (the baby-sitter called me to let me
know).

The Right To Make A Living
Deep down they don’t want to be perceived as “only after the
money.” The result? A lot of school owners end their season
with clients who have large balances. |

Ask Rhee Gold
Dance educators seek
advice about teaching issues. I have a staff member who is
going through a nasty divorce and it is starting to affect
her work as well as her children. |
