A Teachers Touch

Last year, the phone rang at my studio and a young lady asked me if I remembered her from many years ago. I was shocked to hear her voice, and I did remember her. Carolyn (not her real name) had danced with me 20 years ago, starting when she was a dimpled, curly-haired first-grader. Then at age 13 she had disappeared.

   On My Mind-Rhee Gold

Time flies when you’re having fun are the best words I can use to describe my thoughts as we approach the first anniversary of the Goldrush. Our little four-page newsletter that started more than a decade ago is now an eighty-page full-color magazine read by thousands of  “dance people” around the world!

Word Of Mouth Spreads Like Wildfire

The first thing that I clear up is that the ads, brochures, good dancers are all important, but for the average school owner’s the best marketing tool is (without a doubt) positive word of mouth.

Nana's Negative Word Of Mouth Soufflé

A never-fail recipe from Netty Rocker – (and one we hope you will NOT try!!).

Cook time: In some cases this recipe will cook quickly or it could take years.

  Weekly Inspiration

Concept + Context = Concert

These are my 5 favorite words: “Let’s put on a show!” Really. No, really. As luck would have it, I’m a director/choreographer by trade, so I get to put on lots of shows.

  Know Your Market

Yes, you’re the best! Does that make you a success?  Do you know four- to twelve-year-old children and their parents are your market? If you do, how do you draw this group to your studio? Continue to strive to make the best dancers possible. Just don’t flaunt it.

National Dance Educator of the Year

Dr. Joy Friedlander contributes to the dance education field with a positive attitude and strong artistic and pedagogical abilities. Joy's expertise is evident across many educational sectors.

Pre-Pointe Parents In Your Back Pocket

Some parents also have preconceived notions of sending their daughter to class the first day with pointe shoes in hand and expecting to see her twirl around “on her toes” before the day is over. As their pointe teacher, be sure that your parameters are clearly stated ahead of time to prevent turmoil later on down the line.

Business is Business-Or Is It

Teachers offering a hand to each other

Last month Goldrush Online posted a question for our readers to respond to. This one got everyone fired up! We received more than 100 responses and they're still coming in! It was a hot topic; check it out!

  Classroom Resources

Dance education is an ever-evolving art form. All teachers seek resources to inspire them to be the teachers they can be.

Goldrush has compiled a list of various educational books, music, syllabi options, publications, videos and more to help you start your season on the right foot.

Trading The World For 1,600 Square Feet

If you had told me 10 years ago that one day I would be the proud owner of a tiny but lovely dance school, I would have said you were nuts. Teaching for two dance schools was just what I wanted—I walked in, taught my classes, and off I went with no worries.

Our Readers Want Your Advice

I’m finding it hard to balance the parental responsibility and the school responsibility with just one child and now I’m panicking; wondering how I’m going to manage two! I missed my daughter’s first steps (the baby-sitter called me to let me know).

The Right To Make A Living

Deep down they don’t want to be perceived as “only after the money.” The result? A lot of school owners end their season with clients who have large balances.

  Read Our Mail

I have had my studio for seven years. I am constantly trying to improve myself as a teacher and business owner. Your Goldrush magazine is the first publication that has truly helped me. I read each issue cover to cover.

  Ask Rhee Gold

Dance educators seek advice about teaching issues. I have a staff member who is going through a nasty divorce and it is starting to affect her work as well as her children.
