On My Mind

Words from the publisher

Time flies when you’re having fun are the best words I can use to describe my thoughts as we approach the first anniversary of the Goldrush. Our little four-page newsletter that started more than a decade ago is now an eighty-page full-color magazine read by thousands of  “dance people” around the world!

OK, you’re right, it isn’t always fun like Webster might define it. My fun relates to my life as a student, performer, teacher, choreographer, and now publisher. Being the student, there were challenges in dance class. Challenges that turned out to be part of the learning process that led to the ultimate adrenaline rush—when I finally understood what good turn-out was, or I did the third pirouette for the first time. Writing is now my choreography. Seeing an article in print is the same feeling I got when I’d see my choreography on stage.

As for the performing part, I have to admit, I loved the applause the best. Now the applause is coming from the hundreds of emails and letters coming from you, the readers. It’s even better now though—the applause lasts longer. When I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed, I can look up on the wall to read the emails; I end up with applause on demand. Now that’s fun!

When I launched Goldrush, my instinct said, “This publication has to be different. It needs to be focused on a ‘back-to-basics’ approach to dance education, and an absolute value in quality education.” I believe you’ve got to have those basics to become strong at what you do—sort of like the three R’s in the academic world. However, we cannot disregard innovation or change within our community. Dance is ever-evolving, just like the “normal” world! And just like in the “normal” world, everyone has viewpoints, philosophies, and standards. Being inclusive of all is one of the basic foundations for this magazine.

One of the best compliments I’ve received since becoming a publisher actually came from an advertiser. He called to inquire about placing an ad in the Goldrush. When I started to go into my sales pitch, he said, “Stop! You don’t have to sell me, I don’t care what your numbers are, I want to be part of the philosophy of the Goldrush.”  Ever since, I am reminded every day—it’s not just a magazine, it’s a philosophy.

This edition is focused on making our classrooms and our businesses the best they can be. As we begin a new season, let’s be appreciative of the gift of dance and those who share our passion, and how best we can pass on that passion.

Thanks for your support and I look forward to a second year of fun!

Sincerely, Rhee Gold
