Community Exposure
Although many school owners are actively
participating in local performances, many are not taking advantage
of the “no-charge” marketing opportunities. Some believe they are
too busy or it isn’t professional enough.

Empty pockets? No Problem!
When I proposed starting a competitive-team dance troupe, my
business partner laughed at me. Our four-year-old studio is
in the rural community of Dunnellon, Florida—population
3,000, with a median family income of around $27,000.

Making Economic "Cents" Of It All. How
Much Does That Class Really Make?
We’ve got the choreography,
performances, competitions, and Nutcrackers; and those
things are a miniscule sample of the daily school owner’s
agenda. I would bet a large majority of us have never sat
down to analyze what each class
really makes. |

A Balancing Act-Reader Response
Teacher helping teacher
I’m finding it hard to balance the parental
responsibility and the school responsibility with just one child and
now I’m panicking; wondering how I’m going to manage two! I missed
my daughter’s first steps (the baby-sitter called me to let me know)
and so many other precious “mommy-baby” moments because of my
schedule. I don’t want to do that again.

If It Quacks Like A Duck
Despite everything, the owner of this studio is convinced
this teacher is an “independent contractor.” In fact,
the studio went even further and had the instructor sign a
written agreement as if such agreement proves such status
(IRS does not have to honor it). The owner feels
confident that it is unnecessary to withhold federal, state,
and Social Security (FICA) taxes or pay unemployment or
worker’s compensation insurance.

Don't Dance Too Fast
Have you ever watched kids
on a merry-go-round,
Or listened to the rain
slapping the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly’s erratic
flight,
Or gazed at the sun fading
in the night?
____
Something special for the start of
the new season!
