On My Mind
Rhee Gold

Words from the publisher
As we begin a new year, most of us make resolutions
that promise to help make life easier or better. They are
dreams we hope will come to fruition by this time next year, and there is a
sense of exciting wonderment with the question, “What will the next year
really bring?” At the start of 2004, I was very much in that dreaming and
wonderment stage. I had launched a new company, yet I didn’t have a full
sense of where we were going; my attitude was to go with the flow and leave
the Higher Power in charge, which had never failed me before.
I had started to publish the Goldrush
news-letter in 1994, as a marketing tool for my competition, American Dance
Awards (ADA). In the back of my mind, I dreamed about how great it would be
if someday it became a full-color magazine that was completely dedicated to
dance teachers and school owners. However, with all the responsibilities of
my competition business and several other ventures, the magazine concept
never materialized.
After retiring from ADA, I labored
over how my new and much smaller company could continue to keep the Goldrush
afloat. The last publication in newsletter-format was April 2004 and I
thought it was the last one. The magazine concept felt too scary for me at
the time!
A couple of weeks after that last
newsletter was published, I got a call from an old friend who said she
thought the Goldrush would make a great magazine and that, “The dance
teaching field needs a publication focused on quality dance education.” For
some reason her comment was the push
that I needed—I would give this magazine thing a shot!
I created a media kit quickly and
emailed it to several potential advertisers. I set a goal of four ad pages.
Within hours I had reached the goal and went far beyond my original
expectations. Soon I was excitedly running around the office singing, “I’m a
magazine!”
The Goldrush is an enormous
responsibility and producing it has come as a bit of a shock since just a
short time ago I had thought my life would slow down a bit. At the same time
I consider this an opportunity of a lifetime! There are more than
three-million children flowing through North America’s dance schools and
more than fifteen thousand schools. How awesome is it that Goldrush can make
a difference in so many lives! I am honored to be in this place. Make 2005
your year to dream—you never know what will happen.
