Day of Dance for Heart Health

Danskin sponsors spirit of women health network

Danskin, a leading dancewear manufacturer and marketer, announced that it will partner with Spirit of Women® for the 2005 Day of Dance for Heart Health® held across the country during February. Day of Dance is a fun-filled way to raise awareness of heart health and disease prevention.

Spirit of Women is a growing network of more than 140 hospitals and health care systems across the country that are joined in a mission to improve the health of American women and their families. Its activities include local health screenings, educational outreach through print and media, physician forums, participation in national health promotions, conferences, and special events in the community. Day of Dance for Heart Health is one interactive community event that brings together consumers, health care providers, hospitals, and corporate partners for a celebration of the benefits of dance and exercise in the prevention of heart disease. It helps to raise community awareness of cardiovascular disease by providing free health screenings, physician-led discussions on cardiovascular disease, along with heart-healthy dance demonstrations and instruction.

Danskin has organized pre-event dance programs at local dance schools across the country on the weekend of February 26–27. At these events, young adults can learn more about preventing heart disease in a fun-filled dance environment. Participants who complete the pre-events will be eligible to dance in their local Day of Dance for Heart Health celebrations. Prizes will be awarded in participating markets. Dance teachers who hold an event will receive a specially made red dress from Danskin. Additionally, Danskin is holding a nationwide contest for an original design of a red-dress dance outfit to be used in 2006. A separate sweepstakes grand prize winner will be awarded a private dance lesson for him- or herself and twenty friends with a Radio City Rockette.

Currently, more than twenty-three events are scheduled to occur in twenty communities across the country. Other Day of Dance partners include Hallmark, Good Housekeeping magazine, and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.

Six Day of Dance events at participating hospitals were held across the country in 2003, providing effective outreach and health screening for thousands of women. Belinda Miller, Director of the Women’s Center at Southeast Alabama Medical Center observed that, “Day of Dance provides a much-needed focus on women and heart disease, and this event gave us a fun atmosphere in which to provide education to women and their families . . . . a wonderful opportunity to focus directly on women’s heart health.”
